banstraat

A new residential building with a unique appearance was carefully integrated on the Banstraat; a special location in the historic Museum Quarter in Amsterdam. The building has six one-story apartments, two of which are located on the ground floor around a central courtyard. Next to the building is the entrance to the underground garage exclusive for residents. To form a powerful base, the plinth is made of beige natural stone. The detailing, including deep windows, accentuates the plasticity of the ground floor to create a relationship with its environment.

The three upper floors, on the other hand, are elaborated more abstractly using beige masonry. Horizontal bands are separated by vertically placed bricks to divide the facade surface. Windows are detailed for the facade and composed of dark metal parts within wooden frames. A slightly protrusive glass volume characterizes the facade. Inlets in the glass volume serve as outdoor areas for each of the three apartments, accessible through a large sliding glass door in the adjacent living room. The mostly glass fourth floor is set back somewhat and thus forms the crown of the building. The wrinkled metal roof with overhang gives this top layer an airy and light character.
