Graf Karel Appel
Dutch painter Karel Appel, who died in 2006 in Zurich, Switzerland, and has been buried in the famous Parisian Père-Lachaise cemetery (division 22).
Karel Appel had close ties with the French capital, he lived there for a long time during his Cobra period. He went to Paris because he felt poorly understood in post-war Netherlands. The city appealed to its sense of freedom. “In the Netherlands I was an outcast at the time. Not only did they have nothing to do with innovations in art, but not at all with painting, with artists ”, he later explained.
The design is inspired by his paintings. The white circle, larger than the grave itself, symbolizes eternity.
